Nordic or Viking Age swords were rare, high-status prestige weapons typically measuring around 90 cm long, featuring double edges, a wide central fuller, and short crossguards. They were used alongside shields primarily for powerful chopping strikes.

Design and Construction

  • Blade Style: Broad, flat, double-edged blades optimized for cutting.
  • Pattern Welding: Many blades used twisted iron and steel strips hammered together to add strength and create visible swirling patterns.
  • The Hilts: Classified by archaeologists using the Petersen typology based on distinct multi-lobed or disc pommel shapes.
  • Materials: Elite hilts featured decorations using silver, copper, gold, bone, or antler.
