A katana is a traditional Japanese samurai sword defined by its curved, single-edged blade, circular handguard, and long grip for two-handed use. Historically used by feudal Japan’s warriors, it measures over 60 cm (24 inches) in blade length.

Design and Anatomy

  • Blade (Nagasa): Curved, forged from high-carbon or folded steel with a distinct temper line called a hamon.
  • Guard (Tsuba): Circular or squared metal piece protecting the hand.
  • Hilt (Tsuka): Long handle wrapped in materials like rayskin (samé) and braided cord (ito).
  • Scabbard (Saya): Wooden or lacquered sheath built to house the blade safely.

Manufacturing Process

  • Tamahagane: Traditional steel smelted from iron sand and charcoal inside a clay furnace (tatara).
  • Folding: Repeatedly heating, hammering, and folding the steel to purge impurities and distribute carbon evenly.
  • Differential Hardening: Applying a clay mixture thickly to the spine and thinly to the edge before water quenching, creating a hard cutting edge and flexible spine that forms the natural curve.
